Detroit Lions make 6 cuts, establish 80-man roster

The Lions are done with their split squad.

The Detroit Lions broke some early-morning news on Sunday, waiving six players: wide receiver Travis Fulgham, guard Josh Garnett, cornerback Michael Jackson, wide receiver Chris Lacy, linebacker Christian Sam, and defensive end Jonathan Wynn.

The moves knock the Lions’ roster down to 80 players. That’s a significant number, because now the Lions are able to practice with their full squad together. Previously, the Lions had chosen to keep 90 players and split the squad between veterans and rookies. New additions to the Collective Bargaining Agreement said that teams could not have all 90 players in the building at one time due to COVID-19 concerns.

Among these cuts, there are a couple of surprises. Former first-round pick Josh Garnett was expected to compete for a depth role on the Lions’ offensive line. Additionally, wide receiver Chris Lacy made last year’s squad and appeared to be on the Lions’ good side. However, like Fulgham—who also made last year’s initial 53-man roster—the Lions decided to move on after making a couple of additions to the wide receiver room this offseason.

Note: It appears the Lions roster is actually at 81 players (the six cuts above, plus the three opt-outs). However, it appears the Lions can have their full squad at practice together, because one player—safety Jalen Elliott—remains on the COVID-19 list and cannot enter the facility until he clears.
