Sunday open thread: How do you feel about the Lions’ linebacker group?

NFL: Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

Are you buying in yet?

The Lions media spoke with defensive coordinator Cory Undlin on Saturday and he had many positive things to say about the defense. He did not shy away from hyping his guys up despite not seeing them in person yet, and he especially had many good things to say about the Lions’ linebacking corps.

Undlin spoke of “versatility” being what this defense is based on, and by all accounts, it appears that him and Patricia are of one mind when it comes to their vision on defensive philosophy. Free agent addition Jamie Collins Sr. was singled out by Patricia earlier in the week as one of those guys that can play any spot you need from a linebacker in a pinch.

It’s clear that Lions coaches like what they have at linebacker, but does everyone share that same optimism?

Today’s Question of the Day is:

How do you feel about the Lions’ current linebacker situation?

My answer: I think signing Jamie Collins in the offseason makes this year’s linebackers better on paper than they were last year, no question about it, but I’m still not feeling very optimistic about the group as a whole just yet.

Versatility is a huge buzz word, and it’s nice if a linebacker can play multiple positions, but if that means playing a guy like Christian Jones who can play all linebacker positions but to a poor degree at each one, then I can’t fully buy in.

This year’s defense will be reliant upon Collins’ high level of play to carry the middle of that defense, and the Lions are also going to need someone like Jahlani Tavai and at least one more linebacker to play at a higher level than they ever have before. Coaches also seem to still have a ton of confidence in Jarrad Davis, but we haven’t seen much evidence to share that same confidence. Maybe Cory Undlin was the missing piece. Time will tell.

Your turn.
