Let’s look at the highlights
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants competed their Blue-White Scrimmage, the highlight of their 2020 training camp, Friday night in MetLife Stadium.
A few highlights:
- Lorenzo Carter was absolutely dominant. Depending on who was counting, and it was difficult since there was only sporadic actual tackling, Carter had anywhere from 3.0 to 4.5 sacks in a half of action. One thing everyone agreed on was that one of those should have been a strip sack, but Daniel Jones was mistakenly ruled down.
- Some of Carter’s work was at the expense of first-round pick Andrew Thomas. At least one sack came against Cameron Fleming.
- Jones led five drives, with only a 47-yard Graham Gano field goal to show for it on the scoreboard. The other drives ended with three punts and what should have been ruled a sack/fumble. The sack/fumble was a concern because Jones was holding the ball around low, perhaps around his hip, when Carter flashed by and swiped it out.
- No official stats were kept, but running backs Wayne Gallman and Dion Lewis had active, productive nights. Gallman had a 44-yard scoring run and caught a short touchdown pass from Cooper Rush.
- Leonard Williams can’t catch a break. One of the sacks credited to Carter, on replay, clearly should have been given to Williams.
- Linebacker Tae Crowder, the final player chosen in the draft, had an active night. He had a pass breakup while matched up with veteran running back Dion Lewis, and a number of tackles.
- Graham Gano went 4 of 4 on field goal attempts, including a game-ending 41-yarder that gave the Blue (offense) a 23-22 victory over the White (defense).
- C.J. Board, vying for a backup receiver spot, had a few catches. He also had several punt return opportunities. A muff and a questionable decision to field a punt inside the 5-yard line won’t help his cause.
- Rookie Darnay Holmes suffered a “lower body” injury late in the scrimmage.
- Ryan Connelly, who missed most of the last week of practice, was on the field for a significant number of snaps in the first half.
Making a statement
This is what the Giants did before the scrimmage as a statement on social injustice was read, partially by co-owner John Mara.
