Buffalo Bills trade Zay Jones to Oakland Raiders

That was quick.

The Buffalo Bills have traded wide receiver Zay Jones to the Oakland Raiders. Jones is a former second round pick, and Buffalo received a fifth-round selection in 2021 according to Chris Mortenson of ESPN.

In Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans, Jones saw his snaps dwindle all the way from the 90% range we had seen late in 2018 down to just one snap. The emergence of Duke Williams on Sunday coupled with Jones’s inability to win contested catches hurt saw him fall out of favor.

Oakland has been looking for wide receiver help since trading for Antonio Brown this offseason. After releasing him, they still had a void.

Jones was drafted by Buffalo before general manager Brandon Beane was hired in 2017. Jones held the NCAA career receptions record and was seen as a solid addition by departing general manager Doug Whaley and the new man in charge, Sean McDermott.

“Zay is a guy that continues to grow and I think he’s still young in his career,” said McDermott on Monday, just hours before the trade. “He’ll continue to do a good job as he continues to grow and focus on what he can control and I really appreciate the way he took a team-first approach yesterday.”

Ultimately, Jones disappointed in his stint with Buffalo. In 26 games, he had 90 catches on 194 targets, 1037 yards, 9 touchdowns, and a 46.4% catch rate.
