Genard Avery carted off during Eagles training camp practice

Didn’t look good.

Genard Avery had to be carted off the field early during today’s Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice session.

Avery went down during an 11-on-11 rep and remained on the ground with his hands on his head for a long period of time as trainers examined him. Doug Pederson and some Eagles players (Cre’Von LeBlanc, Malik Jackson) came over to console the 25-year-old defensive end before he was driven off the field and into the NovaCare Complex.

Things haven’t been going so well for Avery over the past few weeks. The Eagles re-signing Vinny Curry limited his ceiling to being the fifth defensive end at best. Avery’s struggled to make an impact in camp; he’s been outplayed by the likes of Joe Ostman, Casey Toohill, and Shareef Miller. He just hasn’t done enough to make the 53-man roster based on merit.

Avery’s injury might actually help him stick around in Philly, though. While the exact severity of his ailment is currently unknown, it’s fair to expect that Avery could miss significant time. Maybe the Eagles shut him down for the season and stash him away on injured reserve.

Such an outcome would spare Howie Roseman the embarrassment of having to cut Avery, which was looking likely prior to him getting hurt. The Eagles’ decision to trade a 2021 fourth-round pick for him prior to last year’s deadline was ... not looking good. The deal has never made much sense at any point, really. Avery only played 33 defensive snaps for the Eagles last year. Roseman defended the move after the season by saying the Eagles traded for him with the future in mind. Well, the future is here now and his outlook certainly hasn’t improved.

One can only hope that Avery isn’t as seriously hurt as he looked to be on Wednesday morning. It’d be great to see him get back on the field and earn a spot on the team. But it’s possible that his season might be over before it ever began.

The Eagles will issue an updated injury report during Thursday’s practice. We could get more information on Avery’s status at that time, if not before.

Avery’s injury leaves the Eagles with five healthy defensive ends on the roster: Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Ostman, Toohill, and Miller. Vinny Curry is day-to-day with a lower body injury while Derek Barnett is week-to-week with an ankle issue.
